With its emphasis on partying and a romantic midnight smooch New Year can be tough if you are single. These are my suggestions for having a great night and approaching 2012 with a positive attitude – whatever your romance situation.
1. Party at home
If you want to party but can't face going out, why not invite some other single friends over to see the New Year in together? Allow people to bring workmates or other friends you don't know that well and there might even be some chemistry when the clock strikes 12!
2. Don't drink too much
We've all done it, but waking up on New Year's Day with a thumping head is not going to get your 2012 off to a good start! Alcohol is a depressant, which means you'll end up feeling, well, depressed. And when you're under its influence you're more likely to do things you'll regret, like calling or texting exes or maybe someone you've just been on one date with.
3. Review the best bits of your year
Go over last year in your head and list all the good memories you have from that time. Or look at some photos of events, occasions and nights out you've enjoyed with friends and family.
4. Discard the old
The period leading up to New Year's Eve is a good time to let go of all those old loves, clear out the emails, photos, gifts and memories and have a good cry over them if you need to. Then approach 1 January with a fresh and positive attitude.
5. Welcome the new
Most people have an idea of what they're looking for in terms of dating and love, but beware of stereotyping. Does someone really need to share your love of boybands? Or your passion for Man City Football Club? Maybe you should ask yourself: are you too picky? And then challenge yourself to break the mould in 2012.
6. Help a charity
If you are feeling low helping people less fortunate than yourself will really help. Whether it's doing a shift at a local homeless charity or manning the phones for the Samaritans, contact your local volunteer centre to find out how.
7. What do you want to change in 2012?
Resolutions are good but making too many vague promises to yourself and failing to keep them can leave you feeling empty or unmotivated. Keep to one or two resolutions, keep them realistic and think about how you're going to attain them.
8. Say YES
There is nothing you could do as a couple on New Years that you couldn't do on your own if you really wanted to. So if you've said no to something because you don't have a date, let the host know you've changed your mind! Take a single friend along instead if you want some support.
9. Cast your net wide
If you really want 2012 to be the year you find love, open your mind and cast your net wide. If you haven't tried internet dating yet and feel nervous about it, ask another single friend over to your place and work on your profiles together. It's a great way of finding out other people's perspectives of your strengths, too.
10. Learn to be assertive
Do you know how to ask for what you want? Clear communication is key to successful relationships – romantic and business – but many people fail in this area because they have never learned to ask for what they want. There is a difference between being demanding and assertive. Learn to express yourself and your dating experiences will really improve.
11. Write a letter to yourself
Imagine yourself in 20 years time, older and wiser. What advice would you give yourself? Put it down on paper and stick it on the fridge... in the future you will see how wise you really were!
12. Feel the love!
Whether you're single or have been on a few dates with someone, this is the time of year to remember family and friends. Enjoy and appreciate your time with them and when the clock strikes midnight remember to count your blessings! Show some love and a HAPPY NEW YEAR is guaranteed!
